The posters below are advertisements for Cadillac, created in the mid 20th century. When illustrating the Cadillac, Jon Whitcomb (1906-1988) utilised drawing techniques which made the Cadillac look even more impressive than it is. First, he set the car against fantasy backgrounds. In many he dropped the ‘camera’ to worm’s eye view, and in all he has altered the dimensions to make it seem larger. ‘Largeness’ was the Cadillac’s selling-point.

So we could argue that almost every depiction of a vehicle has a fantasy element about it, because vehicles are so closely tied to the people who drive them, and to their milieu. It’s almost impossible to illustrate a vehicle ‘neutrally’.
